Pocket spring or memory foam mattress?

Pocketvering of traagschuim matras? - Ubed

Both pocket springs and memory foam are proven options for sleepers who suffer from physical complaints. Both mattress types are unique in their support, so it is important to understand the pros and cons. Do you want to know which mattress suits you best? Read it below!

Pocket spring mattress characteristics

Pocket spring support

In addition to the fact that pocket springs are known for their ventilating properties, they also provide good support and correct pressure distribution. A pocket spring mattress is usually constructed in zones, at Ubed we use 7-zone pocket springs. The 7 zones ensure that the heavy body parts such as the side and shoulder are cushioned by softer springs. This causes these parts of the body to sink deep enough into the mattress, so that the sleeper lies ergonomically upright and pressure is better distributed.

Memory foam mattress characteristics

Memory foam and moving in bed

Memory foam responds to the sleeper's body heat and then molds to the body. This may sound wonderful for people with shoulder and back problems, but it can actually lead to aggravation of complaints. Memory foam forms a hole in which the sleeper lies. But a mattress should provide good support to keep the spine in a neutral position. A hole shaped to the body in which you cannot move during the night can result in incorrect support, which can lead to an increase in the complaints.

Does an open-cell structure ventilate?

Many mattress manufacturers talk about foam with an open-cell structure, which has good ventilating properties compared to foam with a closed-cell structure. However, this does not work that way, as there is still too little space to 'push away' air and moisture and therefore better regulate your temperature. A useful test, for example, is to place your hand on the foam for about thirty seconds. You will notice that the foam quickly warms up to body temperature. If your body starts to get warm due to the foam during the night, it will try to regulate the heat by moving a lot. As discussed earlier, the mobility of memory foam is minimized by its shape to the body. If your body cannot get rid of the heat, you will be less able to get into deep sleep.

Advantages and disadvantages of memory foam and pocket springs

We list the advantages and disadvantages of both types of mattresses:

Advantages of a memory foam mattress

Advantages of a pocket spring mattress

Improved blood circulation through pressure reduction

Good support due to resilient metal springs and 7 zones.

Excellent ventilation due to space between the pockets.

Pocket spring mattresses are easier to recycle if they are combined with recyclable material.

Disadvantages of memory foam mattress Disadvantages of pocket spring mattress

Material heats up quickly, as air and heat have little space to be removed.

Low quality springs lead to premature wear

Foam easily absorbs moisture and dust, making the mattress less fresh

Memory foam ensures that you move less during the night
Foam is more susceptible to pit formation, which shortens its lifespan
